Ok so I have been out of the railroad loop for a few years. I'm way behind on my news. Last I heard NYSW had brand new B40-8's SD70's, a small fleet of SD45s and its main lifeblood was stacktrains from Buffalo. Now I have been digging and digging on the net to find out what's happened but I cannot seem to find the story. Can someone fill me in on the last 10 years with the NYSW?

Feb 12, 2006

Thank you.

PS- everything I seem to find hasn't been updated since 2000 yeish.

Susquehanna Diesel locomotive timeline, and movements & migrations.

1941 - First diesels arrive on the NYSW in the form of Alco S2 pair 202 & 204.

1942 - First road diesels arrive, Alco RS1's. (S2's and RS1's were all built new for NYSW by Alco)

1947 (end of steam) to 1962 - NYSW operates with a 22-unit all-Alco fleet, six Alco S2 switchers and sixteen Alco RS1 road switchers.

1962 - First new locomotives since the 1940's arrive, GP18 1800, 1802 and 1804. (still on the roster, and operating, 45 years later in 2007!)

1960's and 1970's - Susquehanna operates with only the three GP18's and a few remaining S2's and RS1's.

1983 - Susquehanna buys the famous Alco C430's - 3000, 3002, 3004, 3006, and 3008
All five were originally New York Central units, (then PC, then Conrail) and came to NYSW from Conrail.

1986 - The Susquehanna SD45 fleet arrives, they are 1971-vintage locos bought from Burlington Northern.
Twelve operating SD45's (from BN) plus one parts unit (from NS)...in 2007 only three remain on the roster.

Also arriving with the SD45's are two F45 cowl units, also from BN, they become 3636 and 3638.

1989 - the GE B40-8 fleet arrives, new from GE. 24 units, to power the NYSW stack trains between Buffalo & Binghamton on the Southern Tier Main.
The first brand new units on the roster since the GP18's of 1962. Twenty of the 24 were returned to CSX in 1991, only two years afer they arrived. (CSX helped finance them)
The other four remained on the roster until 2004/2005.

1995 - Susquehanna buys three EMD SD70m units, new from EMD, SD70m 4050, 4052 and 4054.
around 2001 NYSW began leasing these units out to other railroads, today (2007) they are on lease to the Indiana & Ohio Railway.

19?? - some SD45's and one F45 sold to Montana Rail Link.

1995 - The two E-units arrive, E9 2400 and 2402

(the other three were already scrapped by this time.)

For the first time since railroads have existed, there are no Alco locomotives in Binghamton, NY!

leaving only three SD45's on the roster - 3614, 3618, 3634.

2004 - SD40-2 3018, SD40 3020 and SD40 3022 are bought.

and owned by the NYSW, same as the other Cartier units.
However it has never operated as, or been renumbured as, NYSW 3662. It's still OOS and has never operated with NYSW, it's a parts unit in Utica.

Timeline from:

complied
by Scot Lawrence.

Right now that timeline is only focused on locomotives..
maybe I should also add in other historic dates and how they affected the NYSW..like Conrail, CSX, stack trains, etc..
I will check into that..

thanks,
Scot

Well lets see. In 1999 CSX and NS bought and split Conrail. Therefore the NYSW was no longer needed to run intermodal trains on the NS's and CSX's behalf. The SD70M's were deemed surplus and leased to the I&O. In 2003 the B40's 15 year trusts expired and they were returned to the lessor. They have since been sold to the Providence & Worcestor and four tunnel motors (three ex Sp and one ex DRGW) took their place. The SD45's were retired in 2003-2004. Two SD45's 3618 and 3634 were returned to service 2004-2005. The F45, 3636 was returned to service early 2006. In the spring of 2005 the NYSW leased and then purchased a group of Cartier Alco's and MLW's numbered 3660-3674 even only. Hope this helps
