About Us

A living museum

The New York Susquehanna & Western Technical & Historical Society Inc. was formed in the fall of 1988 by several longtime observers of the railroad who felt that there was a need for an organization to preserve the history of the Susquehanna, its ancestor corporations and the rich railroading history of New Jersey. Since that time, the Society grew to over 500 members from 25 states and has at times had members in Canada, England, Germany and New Zealand. The society is incorporated in the state of New Jersey as a non-profit educational organization. It is also recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt organization, as defined in section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Volunteerism -- Our member volunteers come from many walks of life, from mechanics, to college professors to corporate executives, we all come together "workin' on the railroad"
History -- We are committed to the preservation of history. Our Maywood Station division is the exemplification of historical restoration. Our goal is to preserve the rich history of railroading, specifically that of the New York Susquehanna & Western Railroad. We believe that it is crucial to pass on the knowledge and history of the "Steam Era" to the next generation.
Education -- Some of our volunteers come from the railroad world, many do not. What we all have in common is our desire to learn more about history, railroading and life. You can come to us with no background in railroading at all and leave a train engineer. Many of our volunteers have gone on to be professional railroaders. Our training meets or exceeds that offered by the large railroads and is in compliance with all FRA regulations

We had a wonderful time on the Warren County Wine Train! The train doesn't have AC, but even on a 90°+ day, it was manageable with the fans and windows open. Had it not been so hot we would have stopped at the mine to enjoy a bottle of wine and explore. The winery was beautiful, educational, and provided a delicious wine tasting paired with hors d’oeuvres. The owners, workers, and Poncho were a delight.

What an amazing experience. The kids loved it!! We rode the train, and we’re able to walk around on it. They had a gift shop on the train so the kids were able to get train whistles. We stopped at the pumpkin patch on the way back.

Great experience for the family! Get your tickets early they sell out fast. They have parking areas in the town $10. They don’t have a train station but they put up a large white tent to Warm you up. Food truck is down on the lower level in case your hungry. There are porta- potty near box office and bathroom on the train. The train has a gift shop and snack shop. A usher will assist you to the seat. You can wear Xmas pj’s on the train. They will play the Poplar Express music. You will get hot chocolate & a cookie. You will get a silver bell to all That “Believe”They have great entertainment. SANTA Yes! Great memories! It’s about a 1 1/2 event. Notice the box office it’s small have them send the tickets. I wish it was paperless!

We had a great time. The train ride was nice. We sat on the right side to see the view of the river. We rode a bus the rest of the way to the winery. The owner was the guide and also educated us about wine making basics. The wine here was good and we bought a few bottles. This was a lovely experience. Would like to come back and stay longer to enjoy the live music.

Awesome day trip for family. Took my 2 sons (Ages 14 & 7) for the River Train & Susquehannah Mine. Both had a blast riding the train and panning for gems. Highly recommend. The railway is non profit & all employees are volunteers. Prices were decent, only $11/kid & $16/adult (plus $5 extra each for the mine).

Projects & Areas Of Interest

From steam engines to museums, there is something for everyone!

The Steam Program / Mechanical Department

The NYSWTHS is always looking for more people to get involved. We have an active steam program which will teach you from the ground up what you need to know. During the year we have classes on everything from railroad rules training to locomotive maintenance.

The Operations Department

The operations department covers all personnel involved in the movement and operation of trains. Our program , administered by our partners, The Black River and Western Railroad is a fully qualified federally regulated program of railroad operation.

Maywood Station Museum

The Maywood Station Museum has everything for the rail historian - from a restored historic train station with numerous photographs, artifacts and displays to historic equipment and operating model trains, there is plenty to explore and relive.
